Where I live, the nights are starting to feel cooler, the days shorter, and the seasons are shifting. Maybe you notice it too, those subtle reminders that change is always happening. It made me think about how quickly we adjust our external temperature while often ignoring our internal one.
Most of us keep our external comfort level steady year-round. If it gets too cold, we turn up the heat. If it gets too hot, we switch on the AC. We do whatever we can to stay in that comfortable range. But what about our internal thermostat?

Your internal thermostat is your personal comfort zone. It is made of the thoughts, habits, and behaviors you fall back on when life feels uncertain. It is the place where you feel safe and normal, even if it is not serving your growth. If you do not recognize yours, it might be silently holding you back.
Imagine someone who works hard, earns a promotion, and finally lands the role they dreamed of. On paper, it is a win. But inside, they feel like a fraud. Imposter syndrome kicks in, and their brain whispers, “You do not belong here.” To ease the discomfort, they slip into old habits, miss deadlines, and underperform until they are back where they started. Their comfort zone pulled them down.
Or think of someone improving their health. They start eating well, exercising, and going to bed earlier. They look better and feel stronger, but deep down, they do not fully believe they are “a healthy person.” Before long, they drift back into late nights and skipped workouts. Their comfort zone reset them to their old normal.
The good news is you can change this. Once you understand how your comfort zone works, you can train yourself to live at a higher level. Here is how:

Growth never happens inside your comfort zone. Your brain will try to pull you back to safety, but you have the power to reset your internal thermostat to align with the life you want. The discomfort you feel is not a sign to quit—it is a sign you are expanding.
So when you feel resistance creeping in, take a breath and remind yourself: discomfort is growth. Every step you take outside your comfort zone raises your internal temperature until eventually, that new level becomes your normal.
You are capable of more than you realize. Keep choosing growth over comfort, and your future self will thank you.
