Do You Have a Power Word?

Aug 19, 2020

First off, let’s start with me sharing what I mean by “power word”. For me, a power word is a word that defines how you want to show up for your life for a period of time. Some people identify a power word for a year, while others may change their power word throughout the course of a year, depending on what is happening in their life. What is important about a power word is that you connect with it emotionally. It is a word that you feel when you use it to describe yourself and how you want to show up in the world.

There is no right or wrong way to have a power word. What is important, is that you connect with the word. You feel it. It inspires you. It helps you keep going and it helps you keep showing up as the person you want to be when it gets hard, when you are tired, when you feel defeated or when you want to give up.

Some people who are chasing a dream may have power words like driven, relentless, determined, focused, fierce or committed. Some people who may be working on a relationship may have words like intentional, loving, engaged, thoughtful, supportive, or connected. Other people may be in a place where they need to take some time for self-care and unwinding. These individuals may have words like relaxed, calm, peaceful, rested or present. Some individuals may be looking to find more happiness or meaning in their lives. They may have words like joyful, vibrant, influencer, present, spiritual, or impactful.

As I mentioned, there are no right or wrong words and the possibilities are endless. Your personality and what you are wanting in your life at this time will be what determined your power word. As I mentioned, the key is that you feel it. It is there to remind you of what you want and to help energize you to work towards it, even when it feels tough on some days.

Your power word should serve as a cue to you throughout the days, weeks, and months. It is a good idea to have it somewhere as a visible reminder for you. It could be on a sticky note on your computer, written on a bathroom mirror, in your daily planner or set as an alarm on your phone to remind you of what you want to be intentional about.

So, how do you choose your power word? I would suggest blocking off fifteen to thirty minutes and go through the steps below. If at the end you don’t feel a strong connection to any particular word, that is okay. By going through these steps, you will be directing your brain to be thinking about this and one of two things will happen. Either a word will come to you at some point in the coming days or you will sit down and do this activity every few days until you get clear about what your word will be. 1. Get a journal or a piece of paper and for at least 5 minutes, write what you want in your life now, or in the future. Don’t censor yourself. Just write whatever thoughts come to your mind. Think about what you want in your relationships, spirituality, career, parenting, finances, travel, health, etc.
  2. Once you are done (take as much time as you need), go back and highlight or underline the things that excited you the most when you wrote them down. Read back through them and allow yourself to feel the excitement (and maybe even overwhelm).
  3. Next, ask yourself, “how do I need to show up in the word to achieve what I have highlighted”. Really think about the energy and mentality necessary to achieve what you are wanting to achieve.
  4. Write down all the thoughts that come to your mind without censoring them.
  5. Go back through the list and see which words you feel the most. Say the words out loud if possible and identify which words resonate the most with you.
  6. Narrow it down to one word and test it out over the next few days. If you feel a connection to it…that is your power word. If not, try this process again.

Some people find their biggest challenge is picking just one word. I agree this can be a challenge. What I have found is that some people need two or three words if they are working on things in different areas of their life. They may want unstoppable to be their word when thinking about advancing their career, however, they may want worthy to be their word when thinking about being confident about pursuing an amazing relationship. Since there is no right or wrong way to have a power word, you can decide what feels best for you.

Mindset is so important when you are trying to pursue something in your life and having a power word can be a great way to keep your mindset where it needs to be in order for you to keep working towards a goal. So, now I will challenge you to choose your power word. Remember, you can change it at any point it no longer serves you, or if you feel there is another word that will serve you better.
